Press release: The Pocket Gamer Awards 2015 winners revealed

March 3, 2015

Monument Valley, The Banner Saga, Nitrome, and Nintendo win big

PRESS RELEASE | For Immediate Release

Bath, UK – 3rd March 2015 – Steel Media is delighted to announce the winners of the 2015 edition of the Pocket Gamer Awards (http://www.pocketgamerawards.com), which celebrate the very finest from the world of portable gaming.

Voted by thousands of Pocket Gamer readers and revealed at a lively exclusive event in San Francisco last night, 10 winners got up on stage in front of their peers to collect a gong for each of this year’s 14 categories.

If your maths are up to scratch, you’ll realise that means someone must have won more than one award. Four someones, in fact.

Nitrome kicked off a double win by picking up the first category, Best Action/Adventure Game, with Platform Panic, before going on to be voted Best Developer (taking into account the studio’s work on Platform Panic and the Android release of triple PG Awards 2014 winner Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage, alongside accomplished productions such as Endless Doves, Roller Polar).

Stoic Studio’s The Banner Saga followed suit, conquering the Best Adventure/RPG Game and Android Game of the Year categories.

Nintendo, meanwhile, picked up Best Publisher for the second year in a row (and third time overall) together with 3DS Game of the Year for the hugely popular Super Smash Bros.

But the big one, Overall Game of the Year, ultimately went to ustwo’s Monument Valley which had earlier also bagged iOS Game of the Year.

Which is not to detract from the achievement of the night’s other winners. From Threes! to Papers, Please, the breadth of the victors serves to showcase both the quality and variety of the gaming experiences available to mobile gamers.

As such, Steel Media would like to congratulate this year’s winners, as well as all of the finalists for making 2014 an exceptional portable gaming year. We thank our sponsors – Singapore Game Box, YeahMobi, and Chukong Technologies – and the huge number of Pocket Gamer readers who took the time to vote for their favourites.

About the Pocket Gamer Awards

Now in their sixth year, the Pocket Gamer Awards celebrate the very finest from the world of portable gaming.

Any title released on app stores or reviewed by Pocket Gamer between 1st January and 31st December of the previous year is open to consideration by the site’s editorial team during the selection of the finalists.

For 2015 this meant just short of 1,000 games were evaluated for inclusion in the 20 slots available for each of the 14 categories split across traditional format- and genre-specific sections.

Following the hugely popular format of the two most recent Pocket Gamer Awards, while the PG team shortlists the nominees it is the site’s readers who decide the winners via voting.

Press release: The Official Pocket Gamer Guide to Cut the Rope: Time Travel launches on the App Store

October 17, 2014

Comprehensive companion app, produced in association with ZeptoLab, bolsters Steel Media’s range of critically acclaimed PG Guides

PRESS RELEASE | For Immediate Release

Bath, UK – 17th October 2014 – Steel Media, sporting an Om Nom-sized smile on its face, is delighted to announce the arrival of The Official Pocket Gamer Guide to Cut the Rope: Time Travel for iOS devices.

Lovingly produced by the gaming experts at Pocket Gamer and in close collaboration with ZeptoLab, the guide offers the essential lowdown on all of Cut the Rope: Time Travel‘s core elements – including a collection of tips or video walkthroughs, of course – to ensure players get to rule like a boss.

But this is also a guide that celebrates the joyous Cut the Rope experience by showcasing the passion of CTR series’ fans, getting behind-the-scenes access to the game’s concept art, and offering plenty of fun for Om Nom lovers in an exclusive ‘Play Zone’ section.

“Bringing a Cut the Rope game, one of the App Store’s most successful series, into our Pocket Gamer Guides family has been a goal since we set up Steel Media’s Digital Division,” said editorial director Joao Diniz Sanches. “Achieving this in a manner that seamlessly supports the CTR: Time Travel play experience has been a particularly rewarding process – and one that was made possible thanks to ZeptoLab’s excellent cooperation and support throughout this project.”

Cut the Rope: Time Travel was a very unusual project in the series: twice as much candy, twice as many Om Noms on the screen and twice as much fun,” said Misha Lyalin of ZeptoLab. “Which is why we’re especially happy to know that there’s now a groovy new way to get acquainted with our game: not only does Pocket Gamer’s app provide a profound look into the game’s mechanics, it also contains tonnes of additional materials, which represent all the work we’ve put into developing Om Nom’s family history. Also, there are cartoons, mini-games and everything that a Cut the Rope fan might need to go on a candy hunting adventure through time and space”

The Official Pocket Gamer Guide to Cut the Rope: Time Travel is available now for iPad and iPhone, and can be downloaded from the App Store here.

The DMAs, which took place on 26th November in London, is a yearly event that recognises and celebrates the very best of the digital magazine sector.

swipe9Swipe Magazine went up against Mac Life, Maximum PC, WIRED, and many other publications in its chosen category, and was announced the victor at the gala event.

Swipe is put together by a very compact but dedicated team and we’re delighted to see that effort recognised and rewarded by the DMA judges – particularly against some very accomplished competition” said Joao Diniz Sanches, Steel Media Digital Division’s Editorial Director. “Aside from the magazine’s great interactivity so loved by our readers, Swipe wouldn’t be what it is without its content and for that reason I must also congratulate the Pocket Gamer crew for their editorial excellence, providing the foundation on which Swipe is built”.

The bi-monthly magazine, which focuses solely on the finest recent content to have hit the App Store and was previously a DMA 2012 finalist, has undergone a comprehensive redesign since last year’s awards.
